Anti-Cholinergic Side Effects

Meaning

Anti-Cholinergic Side Effects are a spectrum of adverse physiological and cognitive reactions resulting from the pharmacological blockade of acetylcholine receptors, primarily the muscarinic subtype. These effects manifest clinically as symptoms like dry mouth, blurred vision, urinary retention, constipation, and, crucially in the context of hormonal and cognitive health, confusion or memory impairment. Clinicians must meticulously assess a patient’s total anticholinergic burden, especially in older adults, due to the cumulative risk of cognitive decline.
