Antagonism

Meaning

Antagonism, in the context of hormonal health, describes the molecular interaction where one substance, such as a drug or endogenous ligand, blocks or inhibits the biological action of another substance at a specific receptor site. This competitive or non-competitive interference prevents the natural agonist from eliciting its typical downstream physiological response. Understanding antagonism is critical when managing endocrine disorders where excessive signaling needs to be dampened or when assessing drug-nutrient interactions. It represents a direct opposition in biological signaling pathways.
