Anonymization Fallacy

Meaning

The erroneous belief that simply removing explicit personal identifiers, such as names or addresses, from health data is sufficient to prevent re-identification of an individual. This fallacy underestimates the power of combining ostensibly anonymous data points with external information to uniquely pinpoint a person. In the realm of personalized medicine, where granular biological and lifestyle data are collected, this is a significant privacy concern. The risk of re-identification increases exponentially with the depth and breadth of the collected health metrics.
