Androgens

Meaning

Androgens represent a class of steroid hormones, synthesized primarily from cholesterol, that are essential for the development and maintenance of male secondary sexual characteristics. Testosterone is the most well-known and potent androgen, but the group also includes dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and androstenedione. These hormones are critical not only for male reproductive function but also for maintaining muscle mass, bone density, libido, and energy levels in both men and women.
