Androgen-Induced Hypogonadism

Meaning

Androgen-induced hypogonadism is a specific form of secondary hypogonadism characterized by a suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis due to the exogenous administration of androgens, such as testosterone or anabolic-androgenic steroids. This condition leads to a diminished endogenous production of testosterone by the testes, often resulting in testicular atrophy and impaired spermatogenesis. It represents a clinical state where the body’s natural hormonal feedback loop is intentionally or unintentionally overridden by external hormonal input. Recovery of native testicular function post-cessation of exogenous androgen use is highly variable and may require specific clinical interventions.
