Mechanism
The axis operates through a tightly controlled negative feedback loop initiated by the hypothalamus releasing Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH). GnRH stimulates the pituitary gland to secrete Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH). LH, in particular, stimulates the gonads to synthesize and secrete androgens, such as testosterone. Circulating androgen levels then feedback to the hypothalamus and pituitary, inhibiting further GnRH and LH/FSH release, thereby maintaining homeostatic balance.
