Anabolic Steroids

Meaning

Anabolic steroids, formally known as anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), are synthetic derivatives of the natural male hormone testosterone. These compounds are designed to promote anabolism, which refers to the metabolic processes that build molecules from smaller units, specifically enhancing protein synthesis within cells, leading to increased muscle mass and bone density. Concurrently, they possess androgenic properties, responsible for the development and maintenance of male secondary sexual characteristics.
