Amyloid Cascade

Meaning

The Amyloid Cascade hypothesis describes a sequence of events positing that the accumulation and aggregation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptides in the brain initiates the pathological process leading to Alzheimer’s disease. This hypothesis suggests that an imbalance between Aβ production and clearance results in the formation of senile plaques, which subsequently trigger neurofibrillary tangle formation, neuronal loss, and synaptic dysfunction, ultimately manifesting as cognitive decline.
