Amyloid-Β

Meaning

Amyloid-Β, often denoted as Aβ, is a peptide fragment that is pathognomonic for the neurodegenerative pathology of Alzheimer’s disease. This peptide is derived from a larger transmembrane protein and is prone to misfolding and aggregation in the extracellular space of the brain. The accumulation of these aggregated peptides forms the characteristic senile plaques, which are directly implicated in synaptic dysfunction and neuronal toxicity. In the context of longevity, its presence signifies a significant threat to cognitive vitality and central nervous system health.
