AMP-activated Protein Kinase (AMPK)

Meaning

AMP-activated Protein Kinase, commonly abbreviated as AMPK, is a central cellular energy sensor and master regulator of metabolic homeostasis. This enzyme complex detects shifts in the cellular energy charge, specifically the ratio of AMP to ATP, acting as a “fuel gauge” for the cell. When energy stores are depleted, AMPK becomes activated, initiating catabolic pathways to generate ATP while simultaneously suppressing energy-consuming anabolic processes. It plays a pivotal role in modulating glucose and lipid metabolism, making it a therapeutic target in metabolic health.
