Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA)

Meaning

Alpha-Linolenic Acid, or ALA, is an essential omega-3 fatty acid; the human body cannot synthesize it and must acquire it from diet. It is a polyunsaturated fatty acid, structurally defined by a double bond at the third carbon from the methyl end. This nutrient serves as the primary plant-derived omega-3 in human metabolism.
