Allostatic Overload

Meaning

Allostatic Overload is a state of chronic hyperactivation of the body’s stress response systems, resulting in physiological wear and tear. This term describes the cumulative burden on the neuroendocrine, cardiovascular, and immune systems when allostasis, the process of achieving stability through change, becomes maladaptive. When stressor exposure is prolonged or too frequent, the body fails to return to baseline, leading to a persistent elevation of mediators like cortisol and catecholamines. Clinically, this chronic strain manifests as dysregulation, contributing significantly to conditions such as metabolic syndrome, adrenal fatigue, and mood disorders. Recognizing this overload is crucial for shifting therapeutic focus from symptom management to restoring systemic balance.
