Allostatic Load Measurement

Meaning

A clinical and physiological metric quantifying the cumulative wear and tear on the body’s systems resulting from chronic exposure to stress and the necessary adaptive changes. This measurement is not a single value but an index derived from multiple biomarkers across several regulatory systems, including the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, cardiovascular, metabolic, and immune systems. It represents the physiological cost of maintaining allostasis, which is stability through change, and serves as a predictor of future health outcomes and systemic degradation.
