Allostatic Load Contagion

Meaning

The Allostatic Load Contagion describes the inter-individual transmission of cumulative physiological wear and tear, or allostatic load, between two closely connected individuals, most often romantic partners. This phenomenon represents a shared biological burden on the neuroendocrine and cardiovascular systems, resulting from chronic exposure to a partner’s stress-induced physiological dysregulation. It clinically highlights how relational stress can directly impair individual biological health and contribute to shared disease risk.
