Algorithmic Bias

Meaning

Algorithmic bias refers to systematic and repeatable errors in a computer system that create unfair outcomes, such as favoring or disfavoring particular groups of individuals based on non-clinical characteristics. In the context of health and wellness, this occurs when predictive models, often trained on non-representative data sets, inaccurately assess risk or treatment efficacy for diverse populations. Such bias can inadvertently lead to disparities in personalized health recommendations and clinical decision support. It is a critical ethical consideration in the application of artificial intelligence to human physiology.
