Algorithmic Bias in Insurance

Meaning

This term describes systemic, reproducible errors in artificial intelligence systems used by insurance entities, resulting in unfair prejudice against specific patient cohorts. Such bias can manifest in risk stratification, leading to inequitable premium calculation or denial of coverage based on physiological markers. The underlying issue stems from training data that may not accurately represent the hormonal diversity across demographics, particularly concerning conditions like perimenopause or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
