Aldosterone Synthase

Meaning

Aldosterone Synthase, also known as CYP11B2, is a crucial enzyme within the adrenal cortex responsible for the final steps of aldosterone biosynthesis. This cytochrome P450 enzyme converts 11-deoxycorticosterone into corticosterone, then into 18-hydroxycorticosterone, and finally into the potent mineralocorticoid aldosterone. Its function is essential for regulating blood pressure, electrolyte balance, and overall fluid homeostasis in the body. Dysregulation of this enzyme can lead to conditions like primary aldosteronism, impacting cardiovascular health significantly.
