Alcoholic Liver Disease

Meaning

Alcoholic Liver Disease (ALD) represents a spectrum of liver pathologies, ranging from simple steatosis (fatty liver) to alcoholic hepatitis and advanced cirrhosis, all directly attributable to excessive and prolonged alcohol consumption. This chronic condition fundamentally disrupts the liver’s critical metabolic and detoxification functions, including its essential role in steroid hormone metabolism and clearance. Clinically, advanced ALD can lead to significant endocrine dysfunction, such as hypogonadism in men due to impaired testosterone synthesis and increased aromatization.
