Alcohol and Breast Density

Meaning

This term describes the observed clinical relationship where alcohol consumption is positively correlated with increased mammographic breast density, a recognized independent risk factor for breast cancer. Breast density refers to the proportion of glandular and fibrous connective tissue compared to fatty tissue visible on a mammogram. Higher alcohol intake appears to influence the stromal and epithelial components of the breast, potentially increasing the tissue that obscures cancer detection and intrinsically elevates risk.
