Albuminuria

Meaning

Albuminuria is a specific clinical finding defined by the abnormal presence of albumin, the most abundant protein in plasma, in the urine. It serves as a sensitive and crucial biomarker for underlying damage to the kidney’s filtration apparatus, specifically the glomerular barrier integrity. Quantification of albumin in a urine sample is an indispensable tool for the screening and longitudinal management of chronic kidney disease, particularly in individuals with long-standing diabetes or hypertension.
