Albumin Bound Hormone Status

Meaning

This clinical status refers to the concentration of steroid hormones, like testosterone and estradiol, that are reversibly bound to the transport protein albumin in the bloodstream. While less tightly bound than to Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG), this fraction is generally considered part of the “bioavailable” pool alongside the free fraction. Assessing this status provides insight into the total potential hormonal reserve available for tissue uptake. The overall status is a key determinant in understanding a patient’s endocrine capacity.
