AKR1C3

Meaning

AKR1C3, or Aldo-Keto Reductase Family 1 Member C3, is an enzyme involved in the peripheral metabolism of various steroid hormones and prostaglandins. Clinically, this enzyme is known for its high activity in reducing the weak androgen androstenedione into the potent androgen testosterone. It also plays a significant role in the conversion of 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) into the less active metabolite 3α-diol, effectively moderating potent androgen signaling within target cells. This enzyme is a crucial component in the local, tissue-specific regulation of active androgen concentrations, profoundly impacting cellular response. Its expression and activity are particularly relevant in hormone-sensitive tissues such as the prostate, breast, and endometrium.
