AgRP

Meaning

AgRP, or Agouti-related peptide, is a specific neuropeptide predominantly synthesized in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus. This peptide functions as a potent orexigenic signal, meaning it stimulates appetite and concurrently reduces energy expenditure within the body. It achieves this by acting as an endogenous antagonist at melanocortin 3 and 4 receptors, effectively counteracting the satiety-promoting effects of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone.
