AgRP

Meaning

AgRP, or Agouti-related peptide, is a potent neuropeptide synthesized primarily by neurons in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus. It functions as an endogenous antagonist of the melanocortin receptors MC3R and MC4R, which are critical components of the central appetite-regulating system. This peptide is a key player in energy homeostasis, acting to stimulate food intake and decrease energy expenditure. Elevated AgRP signaling is strongly associated with states of positive energy balance and weight gain.
