Age Related SHBG Elevation

Meaning

This clinical phenomenon describes the progressive increase in Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG) concentrations in the serum that commonly occurs as individuals age. Elevated SHBG binds to androgens and estrogens with high affinity, consequently reducing the fraction of free, biologically active hormones available to target tissues. This age-associated shift significantly contributes to symptoms of hormonal decline, even when total hormone levels may appear adequate.
