Age-Related Hypometabolism

Meaning

This term describes the physiological decline in basal metabolic rate (BMR) and overall cellular energy expenditure that occurs progressively with chronological aging. It signifies a reduction in the efficiency of mitochondrial function and a decreased rate of cellular turnover across multiple organ systems. This pervasive energy deficit contributes to the accumulation of cellular senescence and impaired tissue repair. The resultant lower energy state affects the entire endocrine system, influencing thyroid function and sex hormone production.
