Advanced Glycation End Products

Meaning

Advanced Glycation End Products are a diverse group of compounds formed when sugars, such as glucose, react non-enzymatically with proteins, lipids, or nucleic acids, leading to irreversible cross-linking and modification of these biomolecules. This chemical process, known as glycation, occurs spontaneously within the body and is accelerated by elevated blood glucose levels. These modified molecules accumulate over time, contributing to cellular dysfunction and tissue damage.
