Adrenal Suppression

Meaning

Adrenal suppression refers to a diminished capacity of the adrenal glands, specifically the adrenal cortex, to produce sufficient endogenous cortisol and sometimes other adrenal hormones. This condition typically arises when the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is inhibited, most commonly due to prolonged exposure to exogenous glucocorticoids, leading to a state of iatrogenic adrenal insufficiency.
