Adrenal Suppression

Meaning

Adrenal suppression is a clinical state characterized by the inadequate production of cortisol by the adrenal glands, most frequently resulting from the prolonged use of exogenous glucocorticoid medications. This condition compromises the body’s essential ability to respond physiologically to stressors such as illness, injury, or surgery. It represents a critical, often temporary, functional failure within the delicate hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis feedback system.
