Adrenal Rhythm

Meaning

Adrenal rhythm refers to the predictable, cyclical pattern of glucocorticoid secretion, primarily cortisol, orchestrated by the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis over a 24-hour period. This crucial circadian pattern dictates the body’s energy mobilization, inflammatory response, and wakefulness throughout the day. A healthy rhythm is characterized by a sharp peak in cortisol upon waking, known as the Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR), followed by a gradual decline throughout the day, reaching its nadir before sleep. Disruptions to this physiological cadence can significantly impact metabolic function, sleep quality, and overall stress resilience.
