Adrenal Response Blunting

Meaning

This term refers to a diminished or inadequate cortisol secretion response by the adrenal glands, particularly in reaction to a perceived or actual stressor. It signifies a reduction in the expected amplitude of the HPA axis’s stress-induced hormonal output. This blunted reaction is often observed following chronic or prolonged exposure to stress, suggesting a state of adrenal adaptation or exhaustion rather than true adrenal failure. Clinically, this can manifest as profound fatigue and an inability to cope with subsequent stressors.
