Adrenal Cortisol Rhythm

Meaning

This term describes the predictable, cyclical pattern of cortisol secretion from the adrenal glands over a 24-hour period. It is also known as the Circadian Cortisol Rhythm, which is a key component of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis function. The rhythm dictates when the body prepares for activity and when it shifts toward rest and repair. A healthy pattern features the highest cortisol levels shortly after waking, a pattern called the Cortisol Awakening Response, and gradually declines throughout the day, reaching its lowest point near midnight. Clinical evaluation of this rhythm provides crucial insight into an individual’s stress adaptation capacity and overall endocrine resilience.
