Adrenal Cortisol Dysregulation

Meaning

A deviation from the healthy, predictable circadian rhythm and appropriate magnitude of cortisol secretion by the adrenal glands, distinct from overt conditions like Addison’s or Cushing’s disease. This dysregulation reflects a chronic maladaptive response of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis to persistent psychological or physiological stress. The resulting patterns can manifest as persistently high, chronically low, or an inverted diurnal cortisol curve, disrupting metabolic and immune function.
