Adrenal Axis Homeostasis

Meaning

This term denotes the state of balanced, optimal function within the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, which is the body’s central stress response system. Achieving HPA axis homeostasis ensures appropriate and rhythmic secretion of glucocorticoids, particularly cortisol, in response to physiological and psychological stressors. A stable adrenal axis is fundamental for maintaining overall metabolic health, immune function, and consistent energy levels throughout the circadian cycle. When this delicate balance is disrupted, it can lead to conditions often referred to clinically as HPA axis dysfunction.
