Adrenal Atrophy

Meaning

Adrenal atrophy refers to the reduction in size and functional capacity of the adrenal glands, two small organs situated atop the kidneys. This physiological change results in a diminished ability to produce vital steroid hormones, primarily cortisol and aldosterone, which are essential for maintaining numerous bodily functions, including stress response, metabolism, and electrolyte balance.
