Adrenal Androgen Excess

Meaning

Adrenal androgen excess describes a condition where the adrenal glands, small endocrine organs situated atop the kidneys, produce an elevated amount of androgen hormones. These hormones, including dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), DHEA sulfate (DHEA-S), and androstenedione, are typically produced in smaller quantities by the adrenals compared to the gonads. An overproduction leads to a hormonal imbalance that can manifest with various clinical signs.
