Adolescent Bone Health

Meaning

Adolescent bone health refers to the critical process of achieving peak bone mass and ensuring optimal skeletal integrity during the pubertal growth spurt, a period extending roughly from ages 10 to 18. This phase is fundamentally important as approximately half of an adult’s skeletal mass is accrued, directly influencing lifetime risk for osteoporosis and fragility fractures. Proper hormonal milieu, adequate nutrient intake, and mechanical loading are essential determinants of bone mineral density (BMD) and bone quality.
