Adiponectin Paradox

Meaning

The Adiponectin Paradox refers to the counterintuitive observation that while adiponectin generally confers metabolic benefits and is associated with improved insulin sensitivity and anti-inflammatory effects, its levels are paradoxically elevated in certain severe chronic diseases, such as advanced heart failure or end-stage renal disease, where these higher concentrations correlate with poorer clinical outcomes and increased mortality. This phenomenon challenges the simplistic interpretation of adiponectin as solely a protective biomarker.
