Adiponectin

Meaning

A protein hormone produced and secreted primarily by adipocytes, or fat cells, that plays a crucial role in regulating systemic glucose and lipid metabolism. It is classified as an adipokine, a signaling molecule released from adipose tissue, and its circulating levels are typically inversely correlated with body fat percentage. Clinically, higher concentrations of this hormone are strongly associated with improved insulin sensitivity and a significant reduction in cardiovascular risk factors.
