Adipoflammation

Meaning

Adipoflammation is defined as a chronic, low-grade inflammatory state that originates specifically within the body’s adipose, or fat, tissue. This localized inflammation serves as a critical pathophysiological bridge connecting excess body fat, particularly visceral fat, with the systemic development of metabolic dysfunctions. The condition is characterized by the dysregulated secretion of specific signaling molecules, known as adipokines and pro-inflammatory cytokines, from the expanded and stressed fat cells. Clinically, understanding this process is paramount for effectively addressing the downstream complications of obesity, such as insulin resistance and cardiovascular risk.
