Adipocytes

Meaning

Adipocytes are specialized connective tissue cells, commonly referred to as fat cells, that constitute the primary cellular component of adipose tissue. Their fundamental biological role is the storage of energy in the form of triglycerides, which they can release as fatty acids when the body requires fuel. Beyond simple energy storage, these cells are now recognized as a highly active endocrine organ, secreting numerous hormones and signaling molecules called adipokines. This endocrine function directly influences metabolic health, insulin sensitivity, and inflammatory processes throughout the body.
