Adenomyosis

Meaning

Adenomyosis is a benign gynecological condition characterized by the aberrant presence of endometrial glandular tissue, which normally lines the uterus, growing deeply into the muscular wall of the uterus, known as the myometrium. This misplaced tissue continues to respond cyclically to ovarian steroid hormones, often leading to significant uterine enlargement, heavy menstrual bleeding, and severe dysmenorrhea. It represents a specific form of internal endometriosis that can profoundly impact a person’s reproductive health and overall quality of life.
