ADA and GINA Protections

Meaning

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) are federal statutes designed to prevent discrimination. The ADA prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including employment, state and local government services, public accommodations, commercial facilities, transportation, and telecommunications. GINA, enacted later, specifically prohibits discrimination based on genetic information in health insurance and employment, ensuring that genetic predispositions to health conditions, including those related to hormonal or metabolic imbalances, cannot be used to deny coverage or employment opportunities.
