Acute Kidney Injury

Meaning

Acute Kidney Injury, or AKI, represents a sudden and often reversible decline in the kidneys’ ability to filter waste products from the blood. This rapid reduction in renal function leads to the accumulation of nitrogenous wastes, fluid imbalances, and electrolyte disturbances within the body. It signifies a significant and abrupt impairment of the kidneys’ critical homeostatic capabilities.
