Acromegaly

Meaning

Acromegaly is a chronic, debilitating endocrine disorder characterized by the excessive production of Growth Hormone (GH) and consequently, Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1), typically in adulthood. This hormonal imbalance leads to the gradual enlargement of the hands, feet, and facial features, which is often subtle and progresses slowly over many years. Clinical evaluation is essential for diagnosis, which frequently reveals underlying pituitary adenomas as the primary cause of the hypersecretion. The sustained elevation of these anabolic hormones significantly impacts multiple organ systems, necessitating prompt clinical intervention to mitigate systemic complications.
