Acquired Hypercoagulability

Meaning

Acquired Hypercoagulability describes a heightened, non-inherited predisposition of the blood to clot, leading to an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) or arterial thrombosis. This is a clinically significant state where the delicate balance of hemostasis shifts toward pro-coagulation. Unlike genetic thrombophilias, this condition develops later in life due to external or secondary physiological factors. Its presence signals a crucial need for risk stratification and proactive management in patient care.
