ACE I/D Polymorphism

Meaning

The ACE I/D Polymorphism represents a common genetic variation within the Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme gene, which is a critical component of the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System. This variation is categorized by either the insertion (I) or deletion (D) of a 287 base pair segment in the gene’s intron. The presence of this polymorphism can significantly influence the circulating concentration of the ACE enzyme in an individual. Clinically, this genetic marker is often investigated to assess a patient’s predisposition to cardiovascular and metabolic conditions.
