Accelerated Ovarian Aging

Meaning

Accelerated Ovarian Aging (AOA) describes a pathological process where the decline in a woman’s ovarian reserve occurs significantly earlier or faster than the chronologically expected physiological timeline. This condition is characterized by a diminished quantity and quality of oocytes and follicles, leading to reduced fertility potential. Clinically, it is often identified by elevated Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and low Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) levels that are disproportionate to the woman’s age. Recognizing AOA is crucial because it often precedes the onset of premature ovarian insufficiency, presenting a critical window for fertility preservation and hormonal support strategies. The underlying hormonal dysregulation affects not only reproductive capacity but also long-term cardiovascular and bone health.
