Abdominal Fat Storage

Meaning

Abdominal fat storage refers to the accumulation of adipose tissue within the abdominal region, primarily encompassing both subcutaneous fat, located just beneath the skin, and visceral fat, which surrounds internal organs within the peritoneal cavity. This distinction is clinically significant because visceral fat, despite its smaller volume compared to subcutaneous fat, is metabolically more active and carries distinct health implications. The body stores excess energy in these adipocytes, which can expand in size and number depending on caloric intake and expenditure.
