ABCB1 Transporter

Meaning

The ABCB1 Transporter, also known as P-glycoprotein or MDR1, is a critical efflux pump protein found in cell membranes throughout the body, notably in the gut, blood-brain barrier, and liver. This transmembrane protein actively transports various substrates, including many medications and endogenous compounds like hormones, out of the cell. Its function significantly impacts the pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of numerous therapeutic agents used in hormonal health protocols. Genetic polymorphisms in the ABCB1 gene can lead to individual variability in drug absorption and elimination.
