505(b)(2) Pathway

Meaning

The 505(b)(2) pathway is a specific U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulatory mechanism for drug approval. It allows a New Drug Application to leverage the FDA’s prior findings of safety and effectiveness for an already approved drug or published scientific literature. This avoids requiring the applicant to conduct all new clinical trials, distinguishing it from full 505(b)(1) NDAs and 505(j) Abbreviated New Drug Applications.
