5-Alpha-Reductase Inhibitor

Meaning

A class of pharmacological agents that block the action of the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme. These inhibitors are clinically utilized to manage conditions sensitive to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) activity. They specifically target the conversion of testosterone into its more potent androgenic metabolite, DHT, which is implicated in conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia and androgenic alopecia.
